084My Shopaholic Confession

posted by sherliez on February 7th, 2009

Hi. My name is Sherliez and I’m a Shopaholic!

Well, it was one of those periods when payday is just the next day and all my available cash was intended for travel to work and lunch expenses only. So my available cash was only Php750. And so I went to work and I got really stressed and bored in the office. Too many assignments and lots of sudden requests.Since I don’t smoke, my stress counter was really high.

I rode a jeep to cubao and that was around 2 PM and so I slowly walked 3 blocks to MRT because it was a cool January afternoon. It was still too early to go home, I decided to kill the time checking out the UKAY stores in Cubao. As I checked out their branded section… lo and behold!!! I saw an Esprit caramel trench coat! :) It was love at first sight. I blogged about wanting to have my first trench coat and it was a disappointing experience for me.

Clean or not, I tried the Esprit caramel coat on. It perfectly fit me (US size 10). Sleeves were just right, length was still ok. I did not hesitate and purchased it (PhP500). It’s a rare find actually. They put it an ugly red transparent plastic bag. It’s totally hideous!!!!!!!

Since I didn’t like the plastic bag, I tried to find a paper bag to hide my treasure. I went in the Farmer’s plaza mall and went in the Booksale shop and bought a paper bag (Php 28.75). Call it vanity but it’s better than the icky red plastic bag.

Well, did I mention I love books too? I couldn’t help it but I checked out some of their books. Then I saw a little Rice & Risotto recipe book. I just really love cookbooks and actually preparing rice in a different way is really cool! I carried it to the cashier and gave her Php195.

I was really happy with my finds that day. Not expecting the nice trench coat and preparing the easiest risotto in the coming weekend. As I walked to the Cubao MRT station, I decided to count what’s left in my coin purse. I was shocked because all what’s left was only Php26.25!!! It’s not enough to go home! It wouldn’t even let me ride an ordinary bus to San Pedro, Laguna from Cubao (Php 35). It was really an OMG experience. I did not expect it to totally forget my sense of reason!

So just to be sure, I went to a nearby fastfood and sat in the farthest seat so I could really rummage my bag for hidden cash. It was really not fun looking for the wayward coins. Sadly, after ransacking my bag, it could only give me Php8.75.

Since I was really tired I decided to contact my friend Carolina to ask her if I could sleep in her house. I know she’s still in the office watching the Twilight movie. Ladyluck was not really around me that time. My cellphone load got expired that day too and my phone’s about to go dead. I opted not to buy more load since I knew that she wouldn’t reply right away and it would further deplete my poverty and calling was actually not the option.

I am working in a company providing excellent customer service, I decided to go back to the Booksale shop and insist my right as a customer and ask for refund on the risotto book. Sadly the cashier said they don’t refund books and said they get audited. I realized that refunds are non-existent in thrift shops and are not welcome in Philippines!!!! OMG!!

I was really saddened with this news. I should have counted my cash before having a buying spree.

There’s just an idea at the back of my head while thinking about calling my friend and I hoped that I don’t do it here. That’s ASKING STRANGERS FOR MONEY. This was an option that is really humiliating. I was really loathe at asking other people for money. I really wanted to go home that day.

So I threw away my pride and got the nerve to ask the cashier if she has extra Php50. I knew it was humiliating for me and for her! It was really low and degrading. She said she couldn’t give me that much money for she’s on tight budget too. I knew she understood my plight. She asked me where I worked and where I lived and this gave me hope. I only provided her the general answer and I did not say my name too! She said she can only give me Php30 if that was okay with me. I was so elated with her kind offer and accepted it. Beggars can’t be choosy right? I thanked her and I promised to pay her the next day.

So I was able to go home with the extra 30 pesos from the salesgirl in Booksale. So happy that there are still people who have a golden heart to help a shopaholic girl like me. Thank God!

P.S. I returned to the bookstore and did return my loan with extra perks the next day.

OMG! That was really an experience. I did that once during a bus ride when I was in high school, not because I overspent but I forgot my allowance at home, it was really a humbling experience. It was a nice story.
