Eversince I heard about my friend’s misfortune with the bagsnatcher I have never been more aware whenever I go to work every morning. I’ve been going to work in every shift. Name it, I have tried it already. After I tried the 4 AM shift, I never opted other shifts if I have the choice. People around me warned me of the dangers going to work at that particular time. I also tried the 2 AM shift before and I can say it was bad for I couldn’t really tell if I’m working the night shift nor the morning shift. Muggers do have shifting schedules as well. It would also be better for you to learn some self-defense techniques (another post).
Here are my tips if you are going to work at very unusual hours.
1. If you have a company service car, avail it. It’s safer.
2. Dress simply. These days muggers don’t care anymore how you dress anyway but just for the safe side, don’t wear any shiny jewelries nor don’t flaunt your latest electronic gadgets. If you need to wear those very proper office clothes and they are too classy, just change your clothes in the office.
3. If walking on the sidewalk, keep your shoulder bag away from the road. Backpacks should be worn how it should be.
4. As much as possible, don’t bring valuables in your bag.
5. If riding a public transport vehicle such as a bus or jeep, check the people who are riding it. If you think they are dangerous or suspicious, just get off at the nearest well-lit place. I’m not prejudiced against punk/rocker dressers they might just came out from a gig or something and I am a rocker too but just look at how they check out the place. If their eyes are wandering at the passengers…time to bust the place.
If riding a taxi, better choose the popular ones. Write down the taxi’s unique ID and text it to your friend. Make sure you lock all the doors too.
6. Don’t fall asleep while riding these public vehicles. Someone could slash your pocket or bag while you’re on dreamland. And don’t ride them if you are drunk. You’ll be like a honey to a bee.
7. Lastly, if they confronted you already, just give your valuables. They are just material things, so easy to replace. Your life is precious.
